In Shinto religion before praying you need to purify yourself. The first step is buying incense to burn in a big pot in front of the temple. Then purify yourself with the smoke produced by that.. almost like taking a shower of smoke.

After this there is also a fountain to wash your hands and take a drink of water to be purified even inside. Once finished the process of cleansing and purification, it remains only the prayer for one of the many gods of this religion. The process is simple: usual donation (there is always a grate in front of the temple); ring the bell tied to a long rope; 2 handclaps; sign of prayer; bow.
